May and June traditionally focus on the results of our mission within our Stanwood Camano branch community: our High School STEM Scholar Recognition, the introduction of this year’s Tech Trek campers, and the awarding of our college scholarships. Families join their student and it is gratifying to meet them and offer our personal messages of congratulations and support for their daughters.
These are easily two of our most heartfelt celebrations as we enjoy the opportunity to actually engage with those young women whose academic feats are acknowledged through their nominations of school faculty, and/or whose determination to complete their higher education initiates with their application and attention to the requirements we ask them to fulfill.
Please join us for our High School STEM Scholar Recognition and Tech Trek camper introductions on Thursday, May 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the Stanwood United Methodist Church. Helen Smith will be coordinator of the reception. A cake will be ordered but she requests that members who are able, to please bring offerings of savories or fruit to add to the table.
Our branch member, Ann Marie Hall, will once again be our keynote speaker sharing her journey through STEM coursework in college and life choices she continues to make that uses that education.
Ann Marie Hall is a Western Washington native who benefited from several programs designed to encourage girls to pursue education in math and science while in high school. That, and exposure to the field of engineering through her father, led Ann Marie to obtain a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Washington.
While in the chemical engineering program, Ann Marie found she had particularly good “chemistry” with one of her classmates, Charlie. Ann Marie and Charlie were married two weeks after graduation. Ann Marie worked in the oil industry both in California and Washington State for corporations such as Chevron and B.P. before “retiring” to raise a family.
Charlie and Ann Marie live on Camano Island and have two daughters. Ann Marie currently works as a consultant and also does the administration and bookkeeping for Charlie’s orthodontic practice in Stanwood.
